The Science of Slide and Stop

Tribology

From tribology and material understanding,
a mousepad is born.

Chapter 1

Glide and Stop

Right after the flick, the mouse stops exactly where it should.

That instant contains all the science.

A mousepad is an analog product: a laminated structure of cloth, woven and knitted from yarn, and foam.

But science is required there.

Tribology is the science of every phenomenon that occurs between two surfaces in relative motion.

A mouse gliding across a mousepad is almost the definition of tribology itself.

Yet theory alone cannot make a sheet of cloth. Before we speak of coefficients of friction, we must understand the materials that create that friction.

Chapter 2

Knowing the Materials

Yarn thickness, weave density, twist direction. The hardness, rebound elasticity, and flatness of the foam middle layer.

Every material has its own physical properties. If we combine them without understanding those properties, we cannot reproduce the behavior we aim for.

A single difference in yarn twist changes the initial movement. Foam hardness and rebound elasticity shape the feeling of stopping. Foam flatness determines behavior after long use.

Knowing each material property deeply, one by one. That is the prerequisite for applying tribology.

Chapter 3

Two Paths

When we understand material properties and design their combinations, our products divide into two directions.

Best Balance

Speed and stopping. Lightness and weight. Softness and hardness. Opposing elements are placed at a single point of equilibrium.

A pad that feels natural to anyone, and becomes a reference point for every player. We believe serving everyone means not leaning too far toward any single point.

Partial Optimization

Devote everything to speed. Specialize in stopping. Optimize for a specific load, grip, or sensor.

A pad that answers a specific demand with the best result, even while being deliberately biased. Specialized equipment for players, with uncompromising character.

Chapter 4

Mission

Balanced models alone cannot answer the sharp demands of players. Specialized models alone cannot become the entrance for every player.

That is why we continue to refine both wheels with the same depth.

A reference pad and a sharply specialized pad are not made from separate philosophies. The same understanding of tribology, the same attitude toward materials, and the same accumulation of testing form one consistent foundation. Only the purpose branches apart.

If either side is compromised, the quality that reaches the player’s hand cannot be born.

We have continued development through countless failures. And we still do.

Our present is built not on desk theory, but on repeated prototypes and verification.

Tribology is science as a tool. Understanding materials exists for the pursuit of AIM. Only by pursuing both can a mousepad truly exist.

This is ARTISAN’s mission.

At the end of your hand, the mouse glides and stops.
For the precision of that instant, we continue to face the materials.
